Surprisingly for such a historic location, Inverness only became a city at the turn of this century and has been the gateway to the North for many centuries now.  It is still quite an industrial city, Inverness is prosperous and running through it is the River Ness which comes from Loch Ness. It is located just below Black Isle and the Moray Firth and is a great base to choose to explore this part of Scotland.
